-- ABERRIA. 1961 (15´). Gotzon Elortza
A profound and personal reflection on the homeland. It is a reflection
of the rural vision with the bertsolaris (singers of bertso) Valentín
Enbeita and Jon Lopategi and the dantzari (dancer of traditional Basque
dances) Victor Olaeta, symbols of the Basque culture of the time.
Elortza titled the film "Erria" in order to evade censorship.
The documentary Aberria (Gotzon Garate, 1961) is one of the first made
in Basque. It was filmed 50 years ago during Franco’s time, and, among
other factors, we feel that it has great historic value.
During the Franco dictatorship –at the end of the 1950s and beginning of the 1960s- the filmmaker Gotzon Elortza filmed several documentaries with his 16 mm camera. At that time Gotzon lived in Paris and had a clear objective: to ensure that Basque was also present in audiovisual media. Today, those works are regarded as the first documentaries made only in Basque.
